Box style guide

Mailer boxes vs shipping boxes: which one should you use?

How to choose between custom mailer boxes and shipping boxes for e-commerce delivery, product protection and branded unboxing.

Mailer boxes and shipping boxes are both used for delivery, but they solve different problems. A mailer box is usually chosen when the customer will see the box as part of the brand experience. A shipping box is chosen when protection, carton strength and logistics are the main concerns.

If you sell online, start by asking one question: will this box be the customer-facing package, or is it mainly an outer carton?

Quick comparison

Question Mailer box Shipping box
Best for E-commerce orders, subscription boxes, PR kits Export cartons, heavier products, protective outer packing

When to choose mailer boxes

Choose custom mailer boxes when the box is part of the retail experience. They work well for apparel, skincare samples, subscription boxes, small electronics, accessories and influencer kits.

Mailer boxes are useful when you want:

  • Printed outside branding
  • Inside print for an unboxing message
  • A box that does not need tape for normal closure
  • A better first impression than a plain outer carton

When to choose shipping boxes

Choose custom shipping boxes when the product is heavier, fragile or moving through a longer shipping route. A shipping box can still carry a logo, but the structure should be planned around protection first.

Shipping boxes are useful when you need:

  • Stronger board for transit
  • Simple print that survives handling
  • Outer cartons for export packing
  • More room for protective fill or inner retail packaging

Can one box do both jobs?

Sometimes, yes. A strong branded mailer can work for direct-to-consumer delivery when the product is not too heavy. For fragile goods, glass jars or premium retail sets, it is often better to separate the retail box from the outer shipping carton.
